Congreso del estado “Monumento natural” junto con una reserva ecológica que abarca en su totalidad 42 hectáreas. Las grutas fueron descubiertas por los hermanos Rómulo y Laureano Calzada en el año de 1982.<br />

Tiene cómodas instalaciones de restaurantes, asadores, palapas, etc.; cuenta con ocho salones denominados: de los fantasmas, boca de león, la calabaza, tres colas de serpientes, la regadera, cenote de los peces ciegos, mujer sin cabeza y la gran bóveda celeste que unidos entre si tienen una longitud de 500 metros </p>

<P class=spip><FONT color=#3333ff>Las grutas se ubican en el cerro de Coconá, a dos kilómetros de Teapa, localidad que dista 56 kilómetros de Villahermosa. De la Ciudad de México a las Grutas de Coconá hay una distancia por carretera de 833 kilómetros, que se recorren en un tiempo de 10 horas con 40 minutos, aproximadamente. Por avión, habrá que dirigirse en un vuelo de la Ciudad de México a la de Villahermosa que tarda 1 hora con 15 minutos, sin escalas. Una vez ahí hay que proseguir por carretera hasta Teapa, recorriendo una distancia de 56 kilómetros, 45 minutos de viaje, aproximadamente.</FONT></p>
<P class=spip><FONT color=#3333ff>En lengua zoque, el nombre de estas magníficas grutas, enclavadas en las estribaciones de las montañas del norte de Chiapas, significa “agua honda”.</FONT></p>
<P class=spip><FONT color=#3333ff>Fueron descubiertas el siglo pasado, están acondicionadas con andadores y su recorrido es de aproximadamente medio kilómetro; tienen una profundidad de quinientos metros y posee un arroyo subterráneo y un cenote.</FONT></p>
<P class=spip><FONT color=#3333ff>Las grutas cuentan con ocho salones a los que el poeta Carlos Pellicer denominó de los Fantasmas, Boca de León, La Calabaza, Tres Colas de Serpiente, Cenote de los Peces Ciegos en este último con un cuerpo de agua en el que se dice existen dichos peces ciegos, es decir que no requieren de la luz natural por haber nacido precisamente dentro de las cavernas, Mujer sin Cabeza y la Gran Bóveda Celeste. Estos salones se unen entre sí a través de andadores, en una longitud de quinientos metros, a lo largo de los cuales se pueden observar diferentes figuras que el agua y el tiempo han ido formando en sus paredes, en sus techos y en sus húmedos suelos.</FONT></p>
<P class=spip><FONT color=#3333ff>Las paredes de las grutas están cubiertas de estalagmitas y estalactitas. Hay lugares donde, a través de orificios, es posible observar el cielo y la grandeza de la sierra que se eleva exactamente encima de la gruta.</FONT></p>
<P class=spip><FONT color=#3333ff>Una de las atracciones más impresionantes de Coconá es su lago interior de agua transparente y fresca, que está bajo una gran cúpula, mientras que por las paredes caen en pequeñas cascadas las aguas del arroyo Hondo.</FONT></p>
<P class=spip><FONT color=#3333ff>En estas grutas se han encontrado vestigios prehistóricos como huesos de mastodonte y de megaterio, los cuales se encuentran en exhibición en el Museo de Antropología e Historia de la ciudad de México.</FONT></p>
